Dooley's - Wilkesboro, NC

Updated: Mar 6, 2019

Any parent with children who participate in competition sports at some points experiences the joys of travel associated with said sports. For my daughter, this past year we began the dance competition travel experiences. Just as with every other travel adventure, my first step in planning is to look up what the options are in the town where we'll be traveling. I'll be honest. When I first heard we would be going to Wilkesboro, NC, my initial reaction was a bit of panic thinking great, we're going to have to pack for all meals on this trip and make sure to request a room with a fridge and microwave. When I pulled up the Find Me Gluten Free app, I was pleasantly surprised to find 2 local restaurants and 2 chains. Both chain restaurants I already knew could have major cross contamination issues.

The other mom I was traveling with and I knew that Dooley's would be the winner with the girls and us. We most definitely were right. Even the fries were safe. WINNING! We went slightly past the dinner rush, but were pleasantly surprised there was no wait on a Saturday night for dinner.

I have included pictures from their spring 2018 menu below. You can also check on their facebook page for an updated menu. https://www.facebook.com/DooleysWilkesboro/ My daughter, per her usual 10 year old self, chose a plain cheeseburger with gluten free bun and fries. I chose the build your own burger and opted for a mushroom Swiss burger with avocado, no bun. I rarely get the bun because I would rather use my carbs on other things, like a glass of wine and in this case, their famous homemade fries, which were worth every carb, in case you're on the fence.

A little bit of enjoyment over the burger

My mushroom & Swiss burger (what's left when I remembered) sans bun

If you were wondering how good the food is, it's quite apparent from the genuine reaction I captured on my daughter's face. The only issue we encountered was that we forgot to remind the waiter that my daughter needed a gluten free bun, not regular. As soon as the girls' orders came out, my daughter's antenna went up right away. (9 years in, she knows what to look for.) She commented that her bun looked exactly like her friend's. The waiter immediately had the problem resolved and based on time to cook, professionalism, etc, we are confident it wasn't a matter of them just removing the bun. I bring this up only because others have had concerns at different restaurants. Our waiter was more than apologetic about it and I'm pretty sure her plate even appeared with extra fries when it came back out.

We found Dooley's to be professional, delicious, and a well run local establishment. And there were no upset tummies or indicators of cross contamination after the fact. If you're in the area, definitely check it out.
