Gluten Free at Disney World - Holidays 2017

I have been to Disney World a few times since being diagnosed with celiac. As I mentioned in a previous post, now that we have the ability to go back multiple times throughout the year, I will be more intentional on each trip to document and share the places that we visit and eat while at Disney. The New Year's trip was one that was put together with a week's notice, so there were definite limitations on making reservations, but this also cut back on costs. Here's where we ate:

Tanger Outlets - attempted to grab lunch. There's actually nothing safe to eat there, so pack a lunch or plan on going somewhere else.

Cape May - Beach Club Resort

The chef came to our table and walked us through the buffet, clearly pointing out what we could eat and what to stay away from. Although there isn't a menu available online, you can see more information here https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/dining/beach-club-resort/cape-may-cafe/ Since we ate here for dinner, we did not do the character dining (breakfast only). We had plenty of choices and as usual, the chef walked us around the buffet to let us know what our options were and just as with the other buffet style restaurants, the chef offered to make anything we wanted separately in the back. And this is also when I clearly made a critical mistake in parenting, introducing my little to crab legs. She decided she loves them and I foresee her asking for these on a more regular basis, now that she knows she likes them. Not only did she keep going back for more, but she also snagged several off of my plate, or tried...

Boatwright's - Port Orleans Riverside

Lots of choices and a well laid out menu. I had the jambalaya and my daughter chose the macaroni & cheese. Yep, we forgot to take pictures of the main meal, but we remembered to take pictures of the special birthday desserts we enjoyed with our strategically planned trip right between our birthdays. The jambalaya was pretty good, but I think this one would be hard to mess up in most places, especially with the top chefs Disney hires. My daughter was thrilled to actually get some macaroni and cheese that seemed much fresher than some of the other meals. It was pretty tasty! The menu can be found online here, https://www.glutenfreedairyfreewdw.com/boatwrights-dining-hall-allergy-friendly-dinner-menu/

'Ohana - Polynesian Resort

Normally we have an easy healthy protein shake for breakfast, but this is one of those opportunities where the rules need to be broken. This Hawaiian style breakfast is amaze balls and completely worth the splurge if you didn't get the meal plan. The guava juice is even worth the massive sugar spike, trust me on this one. I normally bypass on juice options because I would rather get my carbs from other sources, but this is so delicious. This is one of the places that the gluten free selection is right on par with the gluten filled options: scrambled eggs, Island style fried potatoes, Hawaiian sausage (I think my daughter ate all of them before I could get them in the picture), Hawaiian style ham, fresh fruits, and sugar donuts from Erin McKennas. And they are more than generous with bringing extra servings to the table, not just for the regular meals, but also for the gluten free dining.

Breakfast includes character dining with Lilo, Stitch, Mickey, Minnie, & Pluto.

Love the character dining!!

Gaston's Tavern - Magic Kingdom

This was one of those spontaneous stop ins to see what they had. Since we had a huge breakfast, our meals for the day were completely off schedule. Note to self: when putting the child in charge of packing the cooler for the day, always check behind to make sure that the meals have actually made it into the cooler. (This wasn't the case on this day and we pretty much went through the day snacking and on a constant sugar high. I had withdrawals from not having my easy protein drinks. ) The menu is rather limited, but we definitely enjoyed LeFou's Brew. It's a sugar high in a cup!

Erin McKenna's - Disney Springs

We have made this a tradition to stop here on our way out of town every single time we come down here. Is it sad that for the most part I can look at these and name them without referencing anything? We bring back several treats and freeze them individually, which comes in handy when there's a special treat needed for school and I don't have the time or ability to bake something. Included in this picture are: mint brownie, stuffed cookie, sugar donut, french toast cupcake, cappuccino cupcake, chocolate cupcake, cinnamon roll, and a mint brownie cupcake. Their menu is vegan, kosher, and gluten free. The icing is made of coconut oil, so one things to be aware of is that it will melt if left in a vehicle without air conditioning (like warm Florida weather), which is why we always make room in the cooler for this stop. They also need to be thawed out from the freezer very carefully, preferably, left sitting out overnight and not popped in the microwave.

Blaze Pizza - Disney Springs

This was a last minute decision on our way out of town by our friends. When I pulled up the reviews and my daughter heard that we could have gluten free non cross contaminated pizza, there was no question. I am glad that I read the reviews before going in because they warned me to take a few proper precautions for celiac. This is clearly a place where many come who are gluten free as a preference. Tell them when you order that it's an allergy. They will prep your dough in a sanitized area in the back. Make sure they do a glove change. When they bring your pizza crust back out to you for sauce and toppings, make sure they use the fresh toppings in the cold area below the counter, not the sauce and toppings on the counter that have been reached into with gloved hands spreading the toppings on pizza with gluten. When it goes in the oven, it should be on a different colored pan so that the person removing it from the oven also performs a glove change and uses separate utensils to slice the pizza. This is when I had the pleasure of meeting Zack. He was awesome and very tolerant of my million questions and extra precautions I wanted to ensure were taken. We were getting our pizza as a last stop on the way out of town to eat in the car. GI distress wasn't something that a carful of people wanted to experience, or constant bathroom stops, so I made sure we were safe. As you can tell from the picture below, the pizza was a huge hit!

We love Disney for many reasons and their ease with being able to eat easily despite celiac, gluten intolerance allows us to enjoy our time creating memories, instead of worrying if we will get sick. Gluten free Disney is fantastic!
